One of the set lists songs by the junior praise team at my church is "Holy Spirit" originally from Jesus Culture and also recorded by Kari Jobe. This song has been speaking to me lately; it's provided some comfort and peace. Whenever I listen to it, I am brought to a setting of peace, because it helps me see the Holy Spirit as the great Comforter. When the Holy Spirit enters our environment, when we wholly encounter the glory of God, we are in the presence of God's grace, love and peace. I love the way the verse portrays the value and delicious love of God's presence through the Holy Spirit.
There's nothing worth more That will ever come close No thing can compare You're our living hope
Many Christian emphasize the Holy Spirit's role in bringing revival, or disciplining us in our spiritual life. Remember though, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit, "the Comforter" (other translations use, Advocate or Helper). This word in the original Greek can be directly translated as, "one who is beside." There is a level of intimacy; the Holy Spirit is close to us and with us. Yes, the Holy Spirit brings revival, and yes we walk in the Spirit as we grow as Christians. But the Holy Spirit's presence is intimately tied to peace and hope.
I've tasted and seen Of the sweetest of love Where my heart becomes free And my shame is undone Your presence Lord Holy Spirit you are welcome here Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere Your glory God is what our hearts long for To be overcome by your presence Lord
Analyzing the song itself, I've found the melody to be full of longing and desire, a musical emphasis that to me seems similar to other praise music that express intimacy and love for God and love from God. I love that this song expresses that desire and love too! This song is about the Holy Spirit, but it conveys such beautiful longing for God's love. After all, God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. We taste and see that God is good in this way. And as we welcome the presence of God in our lives, there is peace and comfort. In our grief and strife, in our fears and anxiety, shouldn't we desire the Holy Spirit's presence?
Here is my favorite cover of this song, by Worship on the Porch.
I love that they're singing in the public arcade in Melbourne, literally inviting the Holy Spirit's presence where they are. They sing unashamedly with genuine glory on their faces. May you find that in your life as well.
