We're gonna kick off a new series on our blog called "Tunesdays." Here, we hope to share a song that appeal to us every Tuesday of the week. We share to you the aspects of what makes each song so appealing to our ears.
And to begin, let's start with Brooke Fraser's Hymn.
Brooke Fraser is hands down my favorite song writer. In reality she has written plenty of beautiful (and I mean, imagery, melody, instrumental, holistically BEAUTIFUL) songs. And while this song is not my ultimate favorite from her, it's one of the more special ones. The lyrics are as follows:
If to distant lands I scatter If I sail to farthest seas Would you find and firm and gather
'Til I only dwell in Thee?
If I flee from greenest pastures Would you leave to look for me? Forfeit glory to come after 'Til I only dwell in Thee
If my heart has one ambition If my soul one goal to seek This my solitary vision 'til I only dwell in Thee That I only dwell in Thee 'Til I only dwell in Thee
The first two stanzas are in a form of rhetorical questions that would expect answers of 'yes'. It speaks of the relationship of humans with the Divine. In cases of discontentment, we often leave God for what we think are greener pastures. Hence, the reason why the imagery found in the Scriptures of humans being sheep is heavily alluded in this song.
The central message of this song however, is that God is always searching for us, chasing and wooing us with the hope of us finding Him as the only source of our contentment. Christ, in the ultimate act of seeking us, took the form of humanity to meet us where we are. The cross as His ultimate sacrifice, paves the way for us be reconciled with the God we originally left.
The last stanza speaks of the heart of a believer once he or she finds that fulfillment is only realized in Christ. God in His love always wants us to share in the beauty of His character. And it is only in the midst of being content in Him, dwelling only in Him, that we will find real and lasting fulfillment.
The simplicity of this song, from the lyrics to the instrumental does not limit its power but totally enhances it. Give this song a listen, I guarantee you will fall in love with it.
Have a happy Tuesday!
